Four Killed, Others Injured in Wichita Plane Crash

Wichita, Kansas

A small plane crashed into a flight training building shortly after taking off from a Kansas airport on Thursday, killing four people and leaving five more injured. The fatal plane crash was reported just before 10:20 a.m. near Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita, Kansas.

Authorities say the Hawker Beechcraft B200 Super Air King lost power to an engine while it was taking off from the airport. Soon after, the plane crashed into a two-story building used by FlightSafety International to train pilots.

According to witnesses, the plane appeared to slam into the top of the building, sparking a "horrific" fire. Emergency responders were dispatched to fight the blazing fire and evacuate the building, which at the time of the crash had roughly 100 people inside. Three people in the building were killed in the crash. The fourth, who was found on the roof of the building, is believed to be the pilot. According to ABC7 News, the pilot was the only person aboard the plane. An airport Tweet stated that the FlightSafety International building was severely damaged with walls and ceilings collapsing.

Of the five that sustained injuries, one is listed in serious condition at an area hospital. No word has been given on the status of the others. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have dispatched personnel to investigate Thursday's crash.
