The Worst Plane Crashes of 2014

Airplane 4.PNGAirAsia Flight 8501 is missing. The Boeing 777 airplane with its 155 passengers and 7 crew members departed from Surabaya, Indonesia bound for Singapore early this morning only to disappear 42 minutes into the flight. Indonesian officials have indicated that they believe QZ8501 is likely at the bottom of the sea. If this is true, 2014 will have proven to be one of the deadliest years in recent civil aviation history, according to Business Insider.

Aviation Disasters in 2014

  • March 8, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 - MH370 departed from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing. Less than an hour after departure, the plane disappeared from radar over the South China Sea. The Malaysian military tracked the plane as it deviated from its flight path, crossing the Malay Peninsula before vanishing. All of the 239 people aboard MH370 are presumed dead. The jumbo jet is still missing, leaving only theories of what may have happened in its wake. Many different countries are currently involved in the search for the missing plane.
  • July 17, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 - MH17 departed from Amsterdam and was bound for Kuala Lumpur. When the Boeing 777-200ER was over eastern Ukraine, it was shot down by a surface-to-air missile, presumably fired by pro-Russian separatists, who are in an ongoing war with Ukraine. All of the 298 people aboard the flight were killed. The Malaysian government has said intelligence on the shootdown is "pretty conclusive," but further investigation is needed to be sure a surface-to-air missile was responsible for the crash. Investigators will then turn their attention to who was responsible for the atrocity.
  • July 23, TransAsia Airways Flight 222 - GE222 was bound for Magong Airport on Penghu Island, Taiwan when it crashed into a series of buildings during approach. Of the 58 people onboard, only 10 survived the crash. Five people on the ground were injured. Though the cause of the crash remains under investigation, heavy rain was passing through the area at the time of the crash. Typhoon Matmo had passed over Taiwan and Penghu earlier in the day.
  • July 24, Air Algerie Flight 5017 - AH5017 departed from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and was bound for Algiers, Algeria when the McDonnell Douglas MD-83 crashed in Mali. Air traffic controllers said the plane disappeared from radar only 50 minutes after takeoff. All of the 116 people aboard the flight were killed. The cause of the AH5017 crash is still the subject of investigation.
  • December 28, AirAsia Flight 8501 - Air traffic controllers lost contact with QZ8501 after pilots asked for permission to climb to a higher altitude amid severe thunderstorms. No distress call was issued. The Indonesian military has dispatched Navy ships to the missing jet's last known location.
